Audience and Institution Practice Essay

Question: Assess the importance of marketing in film.

Marketing is an essential key to film for various reasons. This strategy builds an audience for a film. It also allows distributors to target a specific audience. The main goal for a film is exposure and marketing determines just how much exposure a film is able to receive. Marketing also serves as a form of advertisement for film, and assists in keeping fans occupied and keeping the conversation about a film running.

A film is nothing without its viewers. The movie Black Panther, being the first African-American superhero movie, was not only heavily marketed but made approximately $361 million within its first weekend of global release. This film was marketed using cross promotions, special events, media, merchandising, and synergy. The trailer for the film was first launched at an NBA Finals Game with millions of viewers; this cross promotion built a strong foundation for the film’s future audience and greatly assisted in it’s sparking interest. The film was featured throughout different media platforms such as magazines, radio shows, television ads and posters. Each media platform engaged different viewers and spread the word of the up-coming film. The creation of merchandise including clothing and different gadgets kept viewers engaged with the film and also sparked a social media trend which only added to the Black Panther’s exposure. This trend included going to the theaters dressed as a character from the movie; many people even admitted to watching the movie more than once just to participate in the trend. I personally discovered this movie after watching its trailer and decided to watch the actual film because of its trend on social media. Marketing directly builds the audience for a film.

Besides gaining viewers, marketing also attracts a specific audience. The animated film: “The Lego Movie 2” was marketed specifically to attract families, children, and lego-lovers. During a family vacation to LegoLand in late 2018, my family and I came across many posters and billboards advertising the movie in both the theme park as well as our hotel; this cross promotion painted the film as a family-friendly movie. The marketing team even created a video-game based on the movie, this cross-media convergence assisted in spreading knowledge of the film among kids and gamers to catch their attention and increase the potential views of the film.

Marketing also keeps audiences engaged and keeps the conversation of a film running, all creating more profit for distributors. The film “Jurassic World” was advertised through toys, mobile apps, video-games, and even themed candies. There was even an Easter Egg Hunt hosted online as an Easter Holiday marketing strategy. All these components allowed fans and potential film viewers to interact with the movie, gain interest, and keep the conversation running.

Overall, marketing is a key component to film. Not only does it help distributors target specific audiences but it also builds the audience itself.  Marketing builds the exposure that a film needs to succeed and make money.

Practice Extract Essay

The extract that I watched for my essay is titled: “24”. In my opinion, the meaning behind the extract is meant to feature an intense interrogation between a male detective (Jack), and a seemingly ex-ally (Nina). The elements used throughout the movie clip hint that Jack and Nina know each other and were even close at one point. It also emphasizes Jack’s anger towards Nina and suggests a betrayal between them. Besides the relationship between Jack and Nina, the extract shows a deeper cause for the interrogation that involves the safety of others. It also reveals that the inquisition is being closely watched, meaning that Jack was given the task of prying information out of Nina.
In the first scene, a variety of elements are used to deliver the theme. An over- the- shoulder shot, as well as a close-up, are used to introduce Detective Jack. The over- the-shoulder shot allows us to identify with Nina’s hidden feelings behind the interrogation and view Jack through her eyes; from her point of view, he gives off a menacing vibe that sets the tension within the room. The close-up that switches to a clear view of Jack from the shoulders-up, reveals Jack’s emotions towards Nina. The intimidating way he studies her hints that he doesn't think highly of Nina. The extract then features an eye-line match that shows Jack looking towards a camera in the corner of the room; this reveals that they are being watched. Due to the props and set-up of the location including the desolate table and 2 chairs, as well as the camera and bare walls, the audience is now aware that the man and woman are in an interrogation room. This hints back to the cause for Jack’s inquisition of Nina. Another eye-line match features Nina glancing towards the clock, emphasizing that she is running out of time for something important. The sound motif plays in the background whenever there is an exchange between Jack and Nina and it increases the tension and feelings of betrayal between them, it also creates a sense of suspense. A pan is used as Jack sets a seemingly important prop (paper) in front of Nina and the camera moves from side to side to show her reaction to the document. Her reaction seems almost expectant as she looks up at Jack with a slight smirk; the hints at the importance of the document to Nina. A close-up reveals Jack’s reaction which is almost disgusted. The dialogue between them reveals that they do in fact know each other. Their conversation includes talk of a bomb in which Nina knows about but will not reveal until certain circumstances are met; this uncovers the deeper cause behind the interrogation but also emphasizes the animosity between the two. The dialogue also reveals that Nina is a “worse than a traitor” in Jack’s eyes, hinting at the roots of her betrayal and suggesting she was once on his side and that of the other detectives. The dim lighting in this scene increases the suspense and bad blood between Nina and Jack. It also places a spotlight on Jack’s desperation for information.
The second scene’s location cuts to a police station office. The props including computer screens and desks reveal the setting of the scene. The costumes including suits and police uniforms also reveal the setting. A two-shot features two detectives seemingly watching a large computer screen. It is revealed that they are watching the interrogation which emphasizes its importance. Close-ups of both the detectives reveal their anxious and nervous faces. These shots make it crystal-clear that the information Nina holds is crucial for the safety of others
In the third scene, a zoom to Jack’s face emphasizes the anger he holds towards Nina. He then uses a prop (the desk) to throw across the room in an attempt to show her how serious he is. After a close-up of Nina taunting him, Jack begins to choke her in a two-shot. The scene quickly flips to a split-screen as the detectives witness this and rush to stop him. This reveals the importance of Nina being unharmed as well as how much they need her to help them. After stopping Jack, the extract fades out to signify the ending of the clip.
I believe I am right on the director’s vision for the extract because of the many different components that back up my theory. The different shots, editing, sound, and elements all assist in creating links between the characters and scenes which show the relationship and meaning behind the interrogation.

Final Project and CCR

Hi welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. Today, I am turning in my final project. This submission also includes my creative critical reflection questions. I have also inserted my original music video. These different elements show the progress I've made throughout this class. They also show the extent of my filming and editing skills. I was originally supposed to insert my school commercial as well. Due to school being closed, I could not do so. Though my partner and I were unable to re-film for our opening sequence, we tried to edit the scenes to make it look as good as possible. My opening sequence may be lacking some of the requirements.
My CCR or creative critical reflection questions featured me answering four questions. These questions helped me evaluate what I have learned so far. I was able to answer all the questions to my best ability. I filmed my CCR on my iPhone 11. I also edited this video on my phone. I used iMovie to edit the different scenes and put them together. To transfer it to my computer, I had to upload it to my Icloud. I then saved it onto my computer and uploaded it to my google drive. Then I uploaded all 3 videos to a PowerPoint and published it to the web. Thankyou for tuning into my AICE Media Studies Blog. Have a great day!

Re-film: My partner and I have decided

Hi welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. Today I will be discussing what my partner and I have decided. In my previous blogs I mentioned school being closed physically until April 15th. It has now been predicted that school will be physically closed for the rest of the year. I have tried to set up times to film for my partner and I but none of them have worked out. I have come to the conclusion that we most likely will not be able to re-film. I also learned that this year we will not be able to take our AICE exams. Many teachers have mentioned that they will be evaluating us or something of the sort. We are not sure what will happen and are waiting to be updated. Until I will continue to work with our opening  sequence and make it as good as possible.
My partner and I have decided to use the clips that we already filmed. This is because there is no way for us to film now. I will go over the clips that we have already filmed and see which ones I can use. This way, my partner and I will be able to use what we have. Due to this we may not have all the requirements based on the rubric. I will try my best to meet most of the requirements. I will also do all the required  assignments such as our CCR. The CCR/reflection is due on Friday. The final movie Is also due on Friday. Thank you for tuning into my AICE Media Studies Blog.

Didnt Re-Edit Yet

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. Today I will be talking to you about how we still didn’t re-film or re-edit yet. I haven’t began filming or  reshooting  yet. I planned to film last weekend but it ended up being canceled. Due to the corona virus going around, my mom has become more strict about who comes in and out of our house. School has also been canceled physically until April 15th but is predicted to stay closed for the rest of the year. My partner and I are unsure of when we will be able to film again. We hope it will be soon. Until then, I will review the storyboard and sound script. I will also review the shooting script.
I will review the shooting script to make sure all the scenes are shot properly. This will also ensure that we have all the proper shooting movements and angles. The sound script will ensure that all of our actors use the correct lines. It will also ensure that the correct audios and types of sounds such as digetic and non digetic are used. The story board will help us film the scenes properly. It will also help us remember the different scenes and the development of the sequence. My partner and I are not yet sure when we are going to re-film and edit. We may decide to use what we have since we are getting closer to the deadline. We want to have enough time to finish our film. We also want to be able to edit all our scenes soon. Thank you for tuning into my blog.

Didn’t Re-film yet

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. Today I will be discussing my re-filming process. I was actually not able to begin re-filming with my partner yet. I decided that we can’t re-film this weekend seeing that I have work. I will probably begin filming again  next week or over spring break. The filming process went pretty well the first tune around. One thing we have to work on is the acting. During our re-shoot the actors should be more serious. This way, the acting will be more efficient and believable. Our movie will be improved with better acting.
When I begin filming again I will follow the scenes from our first filming. The scenes will be fixed properly and more efficiently. I will also to edit more efficiently to fix any flaws to the sequence. I will also follow the shooting schedule. This will help me check off all the movements and shots I have to film. The sound script will also be followed. This is so we have the right type of sounds in our sequence. All of this will help my filming process. I didn’t re-film this week because I had to work. Thank you for go tuning into my blog!

Filming and Editing Blog

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies blog. Today I will be discussing my filming process. Last week, three people came over to my house to start filming. I asked my partner to bring food coloring. I used this food coloring to replace the fake blood we needed. When my partner arrived, I smeared red food coloring across a large knife. I realized that the food coloring stained skin so I decided not to use it on my little sisters. After preparing the props, I got ready to film. Firstly, I took an establishing shot of my front door wide open. This shot helped to set the scene and introduce the main character.
I introduced the main character with a pan. The pan also introduced the audience to the bloody prop. Filming the prop helped further the development of the movie's plot. I filmed all of the scenes on my  Iphone 11, therefore the quality would be HD. I used the storyboard to go through the different scenes in our opening sequence. This helped the filming process to be more organized and to match the sound and shooting script. In order to edit, I used iMovie. I was able to find a Royalty free sound online to use throughout the movie. I also used iMovie sound effects to enhance the clips. After I finished editing, I exported the movie. Thank you for tuning into my blog today!

Peer Review

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. Today, I will be reflecting on the peer review we were assigned in class. The peer review was assigned to my partner and I on Monday. That day, a group of three girls reviewed my opening sequence. They watched the sequence on my phone. Though I filmed the sequence the prior Saturday and edited it on Sunday, the sequence had many of the requirements listed on the peer review sheet. The peer review was a little awkward, maybe because I’m naturally an awkward person, but they gave us good feedback. I answered questions such as what kind of shot one of the scenes were or “what was a digetic sound again”. After, they watched the sequence a few times, they went back to their seats. Next, I went to check who we were assigned to peer review.
Our teacher posted a sheet on the board with all the names of who was reviewing who. When I went up to the board, I learned that my partner and I were assigned to a girl named Chelsea. I thought I knew who this girl was but I was pretty sure she was absent in class. I turned out to be right so for the rest of the class period I went over my opening sequence with my partner. We planned for our next reshoot.  Today is Thursday, Chelsea was not here during the beginning of the class so when we arrived I worked on another assignment. When she came to class, she explained to us that she did not get to export her scenes to the computer. This meant that we couldn’t complete the peer review today. In conclusion, we didn’t get to peer review our partner on Monday or today. Thanks for tuning into my blog!

Filming on Saturday

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. As I mentioned in my previous blog, I wasn’t able to film last weekend. Because of this my partner and I did not start the filming process.
I also did not start the editing process. I have planned to begin filming this weekend. I was not able to start filming because I had to call into work. My partner was also busy with schoolwork. We will begin filming scenes and we will also do retakes. My partner will be coming to my house in order to film. My other actors will come to my house as well.
I will also be starting the editing process this weekend. In order to edit we will follow the shooting script. We will also follow the sound script as a guideline for our opening sequence. I will personally make sure that all shots and camera angles/ movements match up. Tomorrow, I will purchase the props we need. One prop I will be purchasing is the fake blood. I  need this because my actors  will have to play dead for the sequence. I will film on Saturday and edit on Sunday. Thankyou for tuning into my Aice media studies blog!

Didn’t get to Edit

Hi, welcome back to my AICE media studies blog. Today I will be discussing the editing process of my partner and I’s opening sequence. As you recall from my last blog, my partner and I were not able to start the filming process. I actually planned to start filming scenes this weekend. Since I wasn’t able to start filming, we weren’t able to begin editing. If everything goes according to plan this weekend we will begin filming. Once we film, we will also begin to edit scenes. We will edit and film scenes in time to have them peer-reviewed. These peer reviews will be done in class. Our other classmates will watch our opening sequence and give us feedback.
There were more than one reasons why we didn’t begin filming last week or the week before. As mentioned in my previous blog, I had to  work both weekends. My partner also has homework and prior plans. It was also a very rainy week. Because we didn’t start filming, we also could not edit. I  will begin to edit this weekend. This will happen after I finish filming the needed scenes. I will present the filmed scenes during our peer review. These scenes will be edited. Thank you for tuning into my blog!

Didnt get to film

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies blog. Toda y, I will be discussing my filming process. As hinted by the title, I have not been able to begin filming with my partner yet. I planned to begin filming during the weekend that recently passed. These dates included the 15th-16th. Instead I was called into work on both days. Because of this I failed to start filming over the weekend. Between the rain, working, and homework, neither my partner nor I had time to get together and film this past weekend. We both decided that we would plan again for another date. During my spare time, I went over the storyboard to ensure the filming process would go smoothly when we started. I need to get  few more materials for our filming process.
During this week, I will get more of the makeup and simple costumes we need for filming. I will also provide the fake blood that will be used throughout our sequence. I spoke to my partner and asked if we can film next weekend. This weekend I'll be working again so I know I wont have the time. We'll also edit next weekend. When we do film, I will be filming on my phone. I rather film from my phone because the cameras come out blurry but my iPhone 11 can film in HD. I want our filming to be as clear as possible. Hopefully then it can look neater. Thanks for tuning into my blog, have a great day!

Planning: Title design

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies blog. This blog features the title design plans of my partner and I. The title design is crucial to the editing and filming of our opening sequence. This is because titles are an important part of movies and therefore must compliment them. Because of this, my partner and I had to find a font and color that would match and compliment our opening sequence and it’s genre. The title design will be used for several different things. This will include the names of actors and participants in the movie. It will also include the name of the movie and other elements. The font we have chosen will add to the suspense of our film. Thank you for tuning into my blog, have a great day!

Planning: Location, Participants, Health, and Schedule

Welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. The blog above is another planning blog. This is also essential to the success and completion of my opening sequence. This slideshow includes the location, participants, health/safety precautions, and schedule that will be used throughout the creation of this sequence. Each component of the slideshow is needed for our filming and editing process. The location of the film highlights where our movie will be created and what location the audience sees throughout the movie. The participants highlight all the actors and everyone who helped out with the movie. The health and safety precautions ensure the safety of all individuals involved in the filming process. The schedule is a reasonable guideline that allows us to plan ahead. The slideshow is featured above.

Planning: Shooting Script

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies Blog. This blog will
be featuring another essential key to my opening sequence. This key is my shooting script. The shooting script features every scene of my sequence. These scenes include the lighting, camera angles, shots, and movements of the different scenes. This helps my partner and I in planning out the sequence. It also gives us a guide to follow while filming. This guide will keep us organized and save us time. The shooting script is an essential key to the filming process. The shooting script is featured below.

Planning: Sound Scripts

Hi, welcome back to my AICE Media Studies blog. In this blog, you will be viewing the sound script for my partner and I's opening sequence. As noted, the attachment can be found above. In my sound script, I planned out the dialogue and non-digetic sounds that will be featured throughout our opening sequence. There are 10 different scenes throughout the sequence and each scene features different sounds and dialogue. This sound script will support us throughout the making of our opening sequence. It will be used as a guide throughout our filming process. This will assist in filming different scenes and staying on track with the sound of the film. This makes the sound script an important part of our filming/movie process. The script will also guide the actors, letting them know what to say/what scene to say it in. Thankyou for tuning into my sound script blog, have a great day.

Title Research: Thriller

Hello, today I will be talking about the design and title aspect of the movie: “glass”. I got this information from the website: artofthetitle.

-What connotations do the images carry: The images connotate shock, anger, fear, and suspense. Once the teenagers are caught by older they run and don’t expect to be found, yet the audience knows that the older man has some sort of power. This makes the audience want to continue the movie in order to learn more.

-How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset: As noted in my genre research, thrillers frequently use tracking/dolly shots to exaggerate and create suspense throughout films. Genre is reinforced through the frequent tracking shots in the opening scene. It is used to follow the characters and lead the audience to whatever  occurs next.

-How does the film establish an enigma from the outset: The film establishes an enigma through the anticipating music and jump cuts within the opening sequence.

-What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience: I believe that pathos is used again to appeal to the audience of young adults. Seeing peers around their age throwing around ill-treatment and getting punished for it persuaded them to learn more about the punisher or savior.

- How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences to the film? There are 10 titles displayed including the director, producer, editor, and costume designer.

- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence? I think images that were more mysterious, suspenseful and gave a little background about the film was prioritized because the designer might have wanted to convey a certain feeling to the audience. This could have encouraged them to keep watching.(ex. audience shiver and wants to see more).

- What connotations do the images carry? The images connotate how popular and controversial this supernatural force is. (ex.the newspaper highlighting spirits tormenting homes and ghost hunters)

- How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? The thriller genre revolves around creating/building anticipation throughout the film. The purpose is to keep the audience on high alert and create a sense of uncertainty to put the audiences on the edge of their seats. The genre is reinforced in the opening sequence by including different spooky newspapers about families who had these supernatural forces in their house.
